Admission & Access

Our surgical team will see patients within 24 hours of referral. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary team incorporates 30 consultants working together from all specialties such as gastroenterology, radiotherapy, oncology, pathology and palliative care.

Following initial consultation we will admit the patient within 48 hours. Patients are always encouraged to contact us by telephone should they want to be seen urgently or before their scheduled clinical appointment.

Following intensive diagnostic tests and discussion the patient’s first treatment will be performed within two weeks of admission.

Accommodation

We offer patient centred care in dedicated accommodation, acknowledging the need for privacy, dignity and high quality care by staff with specialist skills and training.

There is new family accommodation on-site for those who wish to be close to their family member undergoing treatment. We can also provide a list of nearby accommodation if staying off-site is preferred.

Information

Patients are given as much information as they wish to receive and are encouraged to take part in the decision making progress, if they wish to do so. Information is provided about the disease, diagnostic and assessment procedures, treatment options and the effects of treatment. Possible complications and adverse effects of treatment are also discussed.

Great care is taken in the provision of verbal and written information to patients and relatives and patients are actively encouraged to ask questions at any time. Most importantly, every effort is made to ensure that information is understood.

Listening to patients’ fears, problems and personal preferences is given high priority. These determine the management chosen by the patient for their illness.

Patients and relatives who wish to may visit the Trust information centres for advice and information. The BACKUP facility employs nurses who work closely with Trust nursing staff to provide this service.
