Interventional radiology

The Hammersmith liver and pancreas cancer team has for many years been well known for the quality of the interventional radiology service. Dr James Jackson and Dr Paul Tait have an international reputation in the field.

The imaging department is able to provide a gamut of services which can be sub-divided into three broad categories:

1) Pre or as an adjunct to surgery

  • Biopsy procedures
  • Percutaneous biliary drainage
  • Portal vein embolisation
  • Diagnostic angiography sometimes allied to venous sampling/hormone estimation

2) Post surgery

  • Drainage procedures

3) Surgery inappropriate

  • Endovascular treatment of bleeding
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of liver/lung deposits
  • Endovascular injection of therapeutic substances (chemotherapy and radiolabelled microspheres)
  • Biliary stent insertion
  • Coeliac axis block for pain relief
